Electing a House Speaker has not taken this long since 1859.
The House of Representatives has adjourned until Monday after a late evening session on Friday ran into Saturday. Since last Tuesday, 14 rounds of voting had been held for the position of House Speaker. Representative Kevin McCarthy of California held many discussions and negotiations throughout the week endeavoring to secure the position.
Congressman McCarthy made agreements and concessions with those in his party in order to garner the votes necessary to secure the speakership. He succeeded in his bid for the role on the 15th vote in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The last time electing the Speaker of the House took this long was 1859 (however, that year required 44 rounds of voting).
